- The Andrew W. Mellon CREATE Grants Program -
Leveraging Cultural Resources through Intra-Institutional Collaboration

Welcome to CREATE!

Thanks to the generosity of the Mellon Foundation, the University of Miami Libraries and Lowe Art Museum “UMLLAM” embarked on a four-year collaborative project (2017-2021) designed to encourage faculty and student engagement with the University’s collections while also increasing object-based outreach and educational opportunities for our many constituencies.

This multi-faceted undertaking, which grew out of a summit and resulting White Paper (both of which were spearheaded by the University of Miami), featured two new faculty fellowships and a new fund to incentivize UM faculty to incorporate the University’s cultural assets into their curricula. Included in this initiative are projects that incorporate the following aspects: Cultural Resources, Engagement, Academics, Technology, and Enrichment (CREATE). Detailed information about these “CREATE” grants, including guidelines for faculty who applied for support, is available on this website.

We are grateful to the Mellon Foundation for its funding of the CREATE Grants Program pilot project, and we hope to carry this momentum forward with additional financial support for the benefit of student learning through CREATE for years to come.

Program Description

CREATE grants are designed to enhance learning and engagement at UM by facilitating close collaboration and resource-sharing. Specifically, awards made under this program are intended to promote the integration of objects in the University of Miami’s Libraries and Lowe Art Museum’s permanent collections into object-centered teaching, learning, and scholarship. CREATE-funded projects have also advanced diversity, equity, and inclusion while promoting anti-racism and social justice.

Over the course of four years, CREATE has awarded 23 competitive grants. These awards were made each fall, spring, and summer between June 2017 and May 2021 and generally ranged between $2,000 and $6,000. The CREATE Committee occasionally approved of projects outside this target range, pending on the merit of the proposal.
