Digital Collections Redaction and Removal Requests Policy

The University of Miami Libraries Digital Collections provide online access to primary source materials and distinctive resources to support teaching, learning, and research at the University and worldwide.

Digital Collections are intended to provide accurate and complete representations of resources. Library staff may not remove content, in whole or in part, from our digital holdings without significantly affecting the quality and usefulness of our collections. In preparing our digital collections, staff take steps to identify and exclude from publication sensitive information that could threaten the privacy and security of individuals, organizations, or others represented in the collection(s).

Given our commitment to preserving the authenticity and integrity of the scholarly and historical record, we are unable to correct errors or inaccuracies present in previously published content made available in Digital Collections such as yearbooks, newspapers, magazines, journals, books, archived websites, commencement programs, and newsletters.

Exceptions to this policy will be considered for content that reveals sensitive or private information about living individuals, including health information, gender identity, student records, financial information, and personally identifiable information, such as Social Security and driver’s license numbers. Examples of redaction or takedown requests that will be considered include when the name or gender of an individual represented in published content does not reflect the individual’s gender identity, or when published content poses a risk to safety (such as in cases of stalking).

Exceptions will not be made for personally identifiable information of former students that has been designated directory information by the University of Miami (see University of Miami Disclosure Policies), unless the information poses a direct threat to the individual’s well-being or safety.

Requests for removal of or redactions from materials which have not been previously published, such as content contained within collections of unpublished archival documents, unpublished photographs, and oral history recordings or transcripts, will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Submitting a Takedown or Redaction Request

You may submit a request for redaction or removal that falls under one of the exceptions above. When submitting a request for removal of published content, please specify how it meets the criteria for takedown or redaction, exact URL of content, and your relationship to the materials (the item(s) were created by you, they describe you, etc.).

Requests for redactions or removals can be made to the department from which the materials originate:
