Library Information Technology

The Library Information Technology department, under the auspices of the Digital Strategies & Scholarly Communication Division, is comprised of three functional units:

  • Client Systems
  • Enterprise Applications
  • Web & Application Development

Client Systems

The Client Systems unit serves as the central point of contact for Library staff to obtain help with most computing and telecommunications questions or problems. Client Systems’s mission is to answer technical questions from library staff as quickly as possible. The staff of Client Systems strive to be knowledgeable and helpful with all information technology in use at the University of Miami Libraries. Our primary service goals center around the network infrastructure, email, remote user access, and the suite of applications found on all staff and public workstations.

Enterprise Applications

The Enterprise Applications unit is responsible for the implementation, operation, integration, and enhancement of the primary library information systems and applications at the University of Miami Libraries and its UM partner libraries. The unit supports the ExLibris Alma product, the libraries core library business operations platform. It comprises workflows for Acquisitions, Resource Management, E-Resource licensing & management, reporting (Analytics), and all Fulfillment activities for all UM libraries. Enterprise Applications also support the Leganto course reserves system, works with Web & Application Development and the Technical Services departments to facilitate the support of our Primo discovery layer, as well as supporting our ATLAS Systems ILLiad and Aeon instances and third-party integrations across all applications.

Web and Application Development

  • Website Development: We create and maintain websites for the UM Libraries.
  • Software Development: We develop custom applications when there is no existing, affordable software to fill the need.
  • Customization: We make third-party software look and work the way the UM Libraries want.
  • Server Maintenance: We manage many of our properties in the Azure cloud, and do the attendant DevOps work.
  • R & D: We explore software and ideas within WAD and with our colleagues around the Libraries.
  • User Experience: We lead and evangelize usability testing in the Libraries.
  • Web Assessment: We collect web statistics, and are looking at better ways of sharing this information.
  • Training: We provide one-on-one or group training to UM Library staff for applications built or managed by our team.
  • Security: We strive to adhere to security best practices.
