Technical Services

The Technical Services department consists of faculty, staff members, and multiple student workers responsible for creating, maintaining, and enriching resource description and metadata for physical, electronic, and digital library collections in all formats and numerous languages. This resource description work is for the collections in Richter Library, Special Collections, University Archives, Cuban Heritage Collection, Weeks Music Library, Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science Library, Newman Information Resources Center (Business), Louis Calder Memorial Library (Medical), Miami Lakes off-site storage facility, and the Architecture Research Center (ARC). The department personnel work closely with distinctive collection curators and digital collections staff to ensure intellectual access and discoverability across multiple discovery platforms and library systems, such as CONTENTdm, Alma, and Primo.

Technical Services serves to:

  • Describe all physical and electronic resources acquired and retained by the library through up-to-date cataloging and metadata practices, with particular emphasis on providing access to the Libraries’ most unique holdings
  • Engage external and internal users about metadata standards, production, transformation, and consulting services
  • Ensure the integrity and quality of all bibliographic and descriptive data developed by the Libraries

Technical Services is a department within the Libraries’ Access and Discovery Services Division and is located on the third floor of the Richter Library.
