FUCHS PARK

This park, formerly a Dade County one called Blue Waters Park, was given to the city of South Miami at its request. The city then deeded an 150×150 foot area of the five acres to the Chamber of Commerce for a 40×40 building to serve as headquarters and a meeting place for South Miami civic and social clubs. The building was planned to include a 34×23 meeting room, secretary’s office and a work room. In addition, it was also decided to rename the park and in April 1956, it was dedicated to the memory of Charles T. Fuchs who founded the Holsum Baking Company in Homestead, Florida, in 1913. In 1934, Fuchs decided to move his bakery to South Miami where it became one of the main employers of the city. Fuchs quickly became a city leader. He was, for instance, a charter member of the South Miami Chamber of Commerce, and served as its president from 1937 to 1944 and from 1949 until his death in 1954 as a result of a fall into the propeller of an air boat. In April 1993, on the 80th anniversary of the Holsum Baking Company, the City of South Miami dedicated a plaque in his memory.

On April 4, 1967, the City Council passed the resolution 2319, naming the area after Congressman Dante B. Fascell. On January 7, 1986, the City Council passed another resolution (5073) “dedicating Dante Fascell Park in honor of United States Congressman Dante B.
